ISLAMABAD: (NCOC) chief Asad Umar on Saturday shot down rumours of a "complete lockdown" to be imposed across the country, saying instead that "targeted interventions" may increase.

The federal minister was chatting with anchor Shahzad Iqbal on Geo News programme Naya Pakistan where he was asked whether the govt was mulling an entire lockdown across the country.

Corvid -19 cases over the past few weeks have recorded a steep rise, because the UK variant reportedly has spread to several parts of Punjab.

The discussion revolved round the rising number of corvid -19 cases and therefore the government's response towards it. Rumours of authorities contemplating a "complete lockdown" across the country were discussed.

"Complete lockdown isn't the answer ," he said. "We tried to elucidate that to people during the primary wave [of the coronavirus] but they didn't understand. you can't pack up the whole country and steal people's livelihoods," added the minister.

Umar, however, hinted at "targeted interventions", saying that the govt tries to require steps that might not affect people's livelihoods.


Sheikh Rasheed said government may impose smart lockdowns' in coming days

Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed had earlier said Pakistan may impose strict restrictions and smart lockdowns within the coming days; however, decision makers also will got to assess the impact of such a choice on the poor and dealing classes.

"I didn't say in the least that a lockdown will begin on Monday. False reports attributed to me are circulating," he had said.

"I didn't speak of an entire , nationwide lockdown in the least . So I wish to mention to everyone, this is often a false report being circulated," Rasheed had said.
