The Centre and states are gearing up to affect cyclonic storm Tauktae that has been build up over the Arabian Sea for days now. The deep depression over the Arabian Sea has intensified into cyclonic storm and is probably going to cross the Gujarat coast around May 18. Later today, PM Modi will hold a gathering to review preparations to affect the approaching cyclone.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called a gathering on Saturday to review preparations to affect the approaching Cyclone Tauktae which intensified into a cyclonic storm on Saturday morning.
The depression within the Arabian Sea is probably going to accentuate into a "very severe cyclonic storm". The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said the cyclonic storm are going to be a really severe cyclonic storm from May 16-18 and cross the Gujarat coast on May 18. The IMD has placed a ‘cyclone watch’ for south Gujarat and Diu coasts.
Along with Gujarat, coastal areas of Goa, Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are placed on alert after the weather department said the impact of the cyclone are going to be felt within the southeast, east-central and northeast Arabian Sea , Lakshadweep islands, Maldives area, triggering heavy rainfall in coastal and adjoining districts of all states.

1. Cyclone Tauktae, pronounced as Tau’Te, intensified into a cyclonic storm on Saturday morning. "Deep Depression intensified into a Cyclonic Storm 'Tauktae' (pronounced as Tau’Te) over Lakshadweep area and adjoining southeast & east central Arabian Sea: Cyclone await south Gujarat & Diu coasts," the IMD said during a tweet on Saturday.
2. In its bulletin at 2.30 pm on Saturday, the weather department said the cyclonic storm 'Tauktae' moved nearly northwards and lay centered over the east-central Arabian Sea , about 290 km southwest of Panjim-Goa, 650 km south-southwest of Mumbai and 880 km south-southeast of Veraval (Gujarat).
3. The IMD bulletin at 2.30 pm added: “It is extremely likely to accentuate further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm during subsequent three hours and into a really Severe Cyclonic Storm during the next 12 hours. it's very likely to maneuver northwestwards and reach the Gujarat coast on the morning of May 18 and cross the Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Naliya around May 18 evening.”
4. The IMD has alerted states along the western coast. within the latest bulletin, the IMD also issued a rain warning for Lakshadweep Islands, Kerala, Tamil Nadu (ghat districts), Karnataka (coastal and adjoining ghat districts), Goa, Gujarat, Diu and West Rajasthan.
5. As incessant rains lashed Kerala, many homes were damaged, trees uprooted and power supply disrupted for hours on Saturday. High range and coastal areas within the central and northern districts of Kerala mainly bore the brunt. Many low-lying areas, including Kuttanad, were inundated. In Ernakulam and Thrissur districts, many homes were inundated thanks to high tides. People from the affected areas are shifted to nearby relief camps by the administration.
6 . Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has directed the authorities in coastal districts of the state to stay alert and well-equipped to tackle things . Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg districts are likely in touch the brunt of the cyclone and hence the collectors of those districts are asked to require all necessary precautions in terms of equipment and manpower, CM Thackeray said.
The Mumbai civic body also took various precautionary measures in sight of the IMD warning. All government vaccination centres are going to be closed for 2 days. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said potentially dangerous tree branches are being cut, dewatering pumps are being stationed in low-lying areas, temporary shelters would be opened if required and rescue teams would be deployed on six main `Chowpatties' (beaches)
