Prime Minister Boris Johnson has married his fiancee Carrie Symonds during a secretly-planned ceremony at Westminster Cathedral.

The wedding happened during a "small ceremony" on Saturday afternoon, a Downing Street spokesman said.

The spokesman added that the couple would celebrate again with family and friends next summer.

Mr Johnson is that the first prime minister to urge married while in office in nearly 200 years.

Vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi offered his congratulations, saying it had been "wonderful" news.

Mr Zahawi told Sky News that he wasn't invited to the ceremony, but congratulated the couple their marriage.

The Sun reports that the church was cleared shortly after 1.30pm, with staff telling visitors it had been being closed thanks to lockdown.

Ms Symonds received the church at 2pm. She wore a white dress but no veil while Mr Johnson wore a “very dapper” suit.

The ceremony was administered by Father Daniel Humphreys, who baptised the couple’s one-year-old son Wilfred last year.

Armed police were said to be standing by for the ceremony.

One witness said the cathedral was closed for the half-hour service. They told The Sun: “It’s not fairly often we've weddings here, and once they came out they were all bungled into a car.”

Mr Johnson and Ms Symonds were the primary unmarried couple to measure in Downing Street. They sleep in the four-bedroom residence at No11 Downing Street instead of the smaller flat in No 10.

Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi offered his congratulations to Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds following their wedding.

“It’s an excellent feeling as you close and in fact i feel it’s an exquisite thing for both of them, that they need made their marriage vows to at least one another,” he told Sky News.

Northern Ireland’s First Minister Arlene Foster tweeted: “Huge congratulations to Boris Johnson & Carrie Symonds on your wedding today.”

Cabinet minister Therese Coffey sent her congratulations to the couple “on your marriage”.

Minister for youngsters and families Vicky Ford sent her congratulations and “big like to Wilf”, adding: “So many weddings are delayed and disrupted by covid. Life is usually better amorously ,”
